  Englische Version: In his Hexaemeron, Saint Ambrose treats the six days of creation. In this manuscript, written in the Benedictine monastery of Saint Emmeram in Ratisbon (present-day Regensburg), Bavaria, the six days are illustrated with full-page pen drawings; another representation of the creator resting on the seventh day concludes the cycle. Representations of the Hexaemeron appear from the late 11th century onwards as a new subject of Romanesque illumination, above all in Bibles or in liturgical works, such as choir books and missals. The Ratisbon school of illumination, responsible for this work of art, however, was famous for the illustration of elaborate theological themes, and, unsurprisingly, the cycle is here transmitted in an exegetical text. Its favorite medium was line drawing, which reached its highest point in Ratisbon in the 12th century. The drawings of the Hexaemeron are impressive in the monumentality of the representations, and in the delicate use of variously colored inks in red and violet or red and brown.
  Die Handschrift enthält mehrere Texte des bedeutenden Kirchenpolitikers und Autors Ambrosius, der von 374 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 397 Bischof von Mailand war. Zu seinen besonders wichtigen Schriften gehört der Haupttext des Codex, das Hexaemeron, eine Auslegung der Schöpfungsgeschichte. Dieser Text ist mit sieben ganzseitigen Federzeichnungen illustriert. Vermutlich als Illustration zum ersten Schöpfungstag - Trennung von Licht und Finsternis, Tag und Nacht - wird der thronende Schöpfer zwischen den Engeln Luzifer und Michael gezeigt. Luzifer erscheint nochmals unter Michaels Füßen und zwar gefesselt in Gestalt des Teufels. Die monumentalen, schlanken hohen Figuren sind in der Regel frontal dargestellt. Die einzige Ausnahme bildet die Illustration zum sechsten Tag, in welcher der Schöpfer dem liegenden schlafenden Adam Eva aus dem Körper zieht. Aufgrund der Herkunft der Handschrift aus St. Emmeram wird angenommen, dass sie dort entstanden ist. In den St. Emmeramer Bibliothekskatalogen des 13. und 15. Jahrhunderts wird das Hexaemeron erwähnt. Der Codex gelangte 1811 von Regensburg nach München. // Autor: Béatrice Hernad // Datum: 2016
