Une chapelle Notre-Dame de Montmorillon fut donnée en 1093 à l'abbaye de Saint-Savin par l'évêque de Poitiers Pierre II[*]. En 1220 un chapitre y fut installé[*]. Les peintures qui sont étudiées ci-après se trouvent dans l'église basse, élevée à la fin du XIe ou au début du XIIe s., sous le choeur de l'édifice principal.
