  • Manuscript 476 dates back to the thirteenth and fourteenth century. It was owned by Ten Duinen Abbey, as indicated by presence of the coat of arms of the Abbey on the binding. The manuscript contains De animalibus by Aristotle (384 - 322 B.C.), translated by William of Moerbeke (c. 1215 - 1286). The translation of Aristotle's book of animals is made up of five works. One of the works is De generatione animalium, in which Aristotle explains his theory of embryology and reproduction. The manuscript also contains a pseudoaristotelian treatise: De Secretis secretorum or the Secret Book of Secrets. In the manuscript, the titles are indicated alternately in blue and red letters. The initials are decorated with spiral ornaments, four initials in the document are also illuminated with animals or humans. Initial Q on Folio 67r is decorated within a golden frame, with pictures of dogs to indicate the beginning of a book on animals. [Summary by Sarah Vanroye]
