  • In this manuscript six texts are combined. Five of them are works by the Venerable Bede (d. 735): (ff. 2v-28r) Beda super Actus apostolorum; (ff. 28r-44r) Retractationes in Actus apostolorum; (ff. 44v-100v) Beda super epistolas catholicas VII; (ff. 100v-105r) De locis sanctis transmarinis; (ff. 105r-139v) Beda super Apocalipsim. The last text (ff. 139v-143r) is the Biblical book Baruch. The first and second text are both commentaries on the Acts of the Apostles, with the latter being a revision of (parts of) his first work. Since no commissioner is mentioned in the prologue to the Retractiones, Bede himself must have deemed this revision necessary. The third and fifth text are similar commentaries on the Catholic Epistles and on the Book of Revelation. De locis sanctis transmarinis is a text on the holy places and locations of pilgrimage in the Holy Land. Bede based this work heavily on a treatise by the Irish abbot Adomnán (d. 704), who in turn had received most of his information from a Frankish bishop who had visited the Levant. The book of Baruch includes solely the text, with only a few comments or notes in the margins. All initials are in red ink, some of them are larger. It is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
