• Manuscript 147 holds three texts from two different authors: (ff. 1r-166v) Gilbertus de Hoilandia in Canticum canticorum; (ff. 166v-174v) Expositio super orationem dominicam; and (ff. 174v-190v) Expositio super symbolum Constantinopolitanum, recensio prima. The first two texts, comprising the majority of the manuscript, have been written by Gilbert of Hoyland (d. 1172), an English abbot and member of the Cistercian Order. His sermons on the Song of Songs, taking up the first 166 leaves in this manuscript, were a continuation of the sermon-commentary left unfinished by the death of Bernard of Clairvaux; following Gilbert's own death the series was completed by John of Ford. The third text was originally attributed in this manuscript to Simon de Cascia (d. 1348), until this assumption was debunked in the seventeenth century by the Ten Duinen monk Carolus de Visch. He correctly credited Simon of Tournai (d. 1201) with writing the text. As the manuscript was copied in the first quarter of the thirteenth century, Simon de Cascia could impossibly have been the author. It is believed to have been copied in Ten Duinen. The texts are presented in two columns per page, with red initials. The first initial, on f. 1r, is decorated with foliage in penwork. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
