• Manuscript 499 is a collection of four commentaries by William Ockham on parts of Aristotle's Organon. The first text (ff. 1r-17r) is Ockham's commentary on the Isagoge of Porphyrius (c. 234-305). The Isagoge is an introduction to Aristotle's Praedicamenta. Ockham's commentary on this latter text is followed immediately afterwards (ff. 17r-47r). The Praedicamenta or Categoriae discusses Aristotle's famous principle of all things being described through ten categories. The third text is a commentary on the Peri Hermeneias or De Interpretatione, discussing propositions and the relationship between language and logic. Lastly, the fourth and largest text (ff. 61r-108r) is Ockham's commentary on the Liber Elenchorum, or De Sophisticis Elenchis. In this work, Aristotle discusses different types of fallacies. The manuscript is written in a Gothic cursive script, by multiple hands. Decorated initials are present in the first two and last text of the manuscript; in the third only the very first has been added. Paragraph marks are found throughout the manuscript. Part of the first end leaf is a fragment of an account. It recalls expenses made for the construction of a road and (perhaps) water infrastructure. The account would most likely have been written by a member of the Ten Duinen abbey, as near Ramskapelle, which is mentioned in the fragment, the abbey possessed a large manor. The binding is medieval and consists of full leather over wooden boards, with traces of blind stamping. The fenestra has survived and is attached to the back board. The codex was originally owned by the Ter Doest abbey, and found its way into the collection of Ten Duinen. The cross-shaped stamp of the latter abbey is found on the first and final leaves.
