• Manuscript 511 is a copy of the commentary of the Augustinian philosopher Aegidius Romanus (ca. 1243 - 1316) on Aristotle's De Sophisticis Elenchis (On Philosophical Refutations). In this work, which is part of Aristotle's writings on logic - the so-called Organon - he sets out the different types of logical fallacies. Aegidius dedicated his commentary to Philip IV of France, whose educator he had been; the dedication is found in most copies, including this one. The last leaves (ff. 108r-109r) have been used roughly contemporarily to draw up a number of tables. The first contains the mean movement of the moon for periods of 28 years, starting at the beginning of our calculation (the radix) and continuing until 1512. The positions are given in signa, gradus, minuta and secunda. The second table gives similar numbers for each of the 28 years within such a period. The third table narrows it further down to the individual months. The fourth table gives the numbers for calculating the equation of the moon and the eccentricity of its orbit. The text is written in a small hybrid script, containing many abbreviations, in two columns per page. Decoration is sparse: the primary textual parts (dedication, prologue, and the questions) are preceded by a decorated initial in penwork. The only other decoration is paragraph marks in red and blue ink. Apart from an initial the questions are also introduced by the first line having been written in majuscules. Annotations and other traces of use (including expungations) are found throughout. The codex is bound in a white leather binding, with blind stamped covers. Traces of mounds and a clasp are visible and the fenestra is found on the back cover. The cross-shaped stamp of the Ten Duinen abbey is found on the first and last leaf of Aegidius' commentary.
