• Manuscript 76 is a composite manuscript consisting of two units: (ff. 1r-201v) the fourteen Pauline epistle; and (f. 202r-237v) the Book of Wisdom. Both texts are accompanied by the corresponding Glossa ordinaria. The first seven leaves of the Pauline epistles have been used for a variety of notes and Biblical passages. On folio 3v the descend from Noah is depicted, accompanied by a consanguinity table. Folio 7v contains a table of contents. In this particular case, we can reconstruct the background of each of the units and the moment of their combination into the current volume. Each unit has an ownership inscription and a note on the manner of acquisition. The first unit found its way into the Ter Doest library as 'a gift of our monk John' (ex dono Iohannis monachi nostri), who might be identified with Johannes de Vos (f. 201v). The note in the second unit (f. 237r) describes how the text was given to the abbey at the request of lord ('dominus') Gerardus de Orscamp, 'whose soul may rest in peace'. Shortly after the latter text was received by the monks, it was bound together with the Pauline epistles in an early Cistercian binding from the twelfth or thirteenth century. Each page has a single column with the text, surrounded by marginal glosses on each side, and interlinear glosses within the text. The Pauline epistles contain a few prominent and well executed multicoloured initials, a.o. at the beginning of the epistle to the Romans ([f. 8r]). The Book of Wisdom is decorated in a more sober fashion, with alternating red and blue initials. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
