    • Philosophe byzantin, actif sous les empereurs Michel VII Ducas (Doukas) et Alexis Ier Comnène ; commentateur de Platon, Aristote, Porphyre, Jamblique et Proclus. - Né vers 1023 en Italie du Sud d'un père normand et d'une mère grecque. - Établi vers 1049 à Constantinople, y devint le disciple, puis l'adversaire, de Michel Psellos auquel il succéda en 1077 dans l'office d'"hypatos" (philosophe en chef). - Accusé d'hérésie en 1082 pour ses idées néo-platoniciennes, fut anathématisé par le Patriarcat et condamné à la réclusion dans un monastère (Source : BnF)
