  Abstract:
  Die Kosmographie ʿAǧāʾib al-maḫlūqāt wa-ġarāʾib al-mauǧūdāt (Die Wunder der Schöpfung und die Merkwürdigkeiten der existenten Dinge) des al-Qazwīnī (ca. 1203-83) war im Laufe der Zeit in der arabischen Welt zu großer Popularität gelangt und in zahlreichen Exemplaren verbreitet worden. Die vorliegende späte Handschrift ist weder datiert noch erwähnt sie den Schreiber. Ein vergleichbares Exemplar zur Münchner Handschrift im Besitz der Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) nennt 1762 als Entstehungsdatum. Der Stil und die Farbgebung der Illustrationen weisen auf eine Herkunft beider Handschriften aus der selben, vielleicht in Palästina beheimateten Werkstatt hin. Die farbenfrohen Illustrationen der Münchner Handschrift wirken beinahe naiv und ähneln Darstellungen in christlich-arabischen Handschriften des 18. Jh., z.B. Barlaam et Josaphat (BNF, arabe 274). Einige Illustrationen lassen erkennen, dass die gesamte Bildkomposition durch Pausen übertragen wurde. Manche Figuren scheinen wie abgeschnitten zu sein, ohne dass dabei die Rahmung des Bildes eine Rolle spielt. Im Vergleich mit der Kosmographie von 1280 (Cod.arab. 464) ist ein deutlicher künstlerischer Verfall in der arabischen Malerei erkennbar.   Englische Version: This cosmography by Zakarīyā Ibn-Muḥammad al-Qazwīnī (circa 1203–83), Kitāb ʿAjāʾib al-makhlūqāt wa-gharāʾib al-mawjūdāt (The wonders of creation, or literally, Marvels of things created and miraculous aspects of things existing), enjoyed great popularity in the Arab world and was transmitted in numerous copies for centuries. This version at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, Germany, is undated, but a strikingly similar manuscript in the National Library of France bears the date 1762. The script, style, and color spectrum of the depictions suggest that both manuscripts were produced in the same workshop, which may have been in Palestine. The illustrations appear naïve and resemble depictions in Christian Arabic manuscripts of the 18th century. Some of the miniatures reveal that occasionally the total composition of the painting was copied by tracing. Some figures seem to be cut off, although there are no frames in which the illustrations were supposed to be set. Compared to the edition of 1280, the manuscript bears witness to a remarkable decline in the artistic quality of Arab painting. Al-Qazwīnī was born in the Persian town of Qazwīn and worked as a legal expert and judge in Persia and Iraq.
