La première mention d'une basilica Sancti Porcharii apparaît dans une charte d'avril 950. C'est très probablement peu de temps avant cette date que Thibaud, trésorier de Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand, fit édifier le monastère. Desservi par les religieux de Saint-Hilaire, le prieuré devint une dépendance de l'abbaye de Bourgueil en 1068, En 1710, devenu simple bénéfice, il fut réuni au Petit Séminaire Saint-Charles de Poitiers.
