Remises à jour en décembre 1852, ces peintures furent alors nettoyées et recouvertes d'un enduit glycériné qui causa en partie les dégradations actuelles. Un prélèvement pour analyse a été fait en 1972 par les services des Monuments historiques, afin d'étudier les moyens de restauration encore possibles. L'état actuel de conservation ne permet pas de donner de photographies acceptables de tous les fragments d'inscriptions encore visibles. Un examen détaillé a pu en être fait grâce aux échafaudages en place en 1972.
