    • Empereur byzantin de 1341 à 1355. - Proche parent des Paléologues, haut dignitaire de la cour impériale ; grand-domestique sous le règne d'Andronic III, puis régent de l'empire durant la minorité de Jean V Paléologue. Entré en conflit avec celui-ci, il se fit reconnaître empereur. Finalement vaincu, il abdiqua en faveur de son fils Mathieu, prit la tonsure et se retira dans un monastère sous le nom de "frère Joasaph Christodoulos". - Auteur, comme moine, de mémoires historiques couvrant les années 1320 à 1356, et d'oeuvres théologiques et philosophiques (Source : BnF)
