Le 2 novembre 1047 fut consacrée l'abbaye de religieuses bénédictines Sainte-Marie, fondée sous les auspices d'Agnès de Bourgogne, veuve du comte de Poitou Guillaume le Grand et remariée au comte d'Anjou Geoffroi Martel. Des modifications importantes furent apportées au sanctuaire par l'architecte Béranger, au cours du XIIe s.
