En 1069 le comte de Poitou, Guy-Geoffroy-Guillaume, donna l'ordre de construire une nouvelle abbaye, sur des terrains qui lui appartenaient, au bord du Clain. L'ouvrage ne fut guère commencé avant 1074. Deux ans plus tard, le comte fit don de la future abbaye à l'ordre de Cluny, cédant aux instances de l'abbé Hugues. En 1082 le prieur clunisien Guy en devint le premier abbé.
