Siège d'un castrum et d'une vicomté, connue jusqu'aux environs de 925, puis d'une vicaria mentionnée jusqu'en 1044, d'une châtellenie enfin, à partir de 1080-1090, Melle possède trois églises romanes : Saint-Hilaire, ancien prieuré bénédictin de Saint-Jean-d'Angély, Saint-Pierre, ancien prieuré bénédictin de Saint-Maixent, et Saint-Savinien qui, sans en avoir le titre, a longtemps servi d'église paroissiale, et qui relevait de l'abbaye de Saint-Jean-d'Angély.
